Gippsland workers are ready for offshore wind

A new study has found that around 70% of Gippsland’s coal power and mining and oil and gas workers have the necessary skills and experience to make the switch to offshore wind.

Yesterday we released Making the move to offshore wind – a guide for workers’ at the State Electricity Commission (SEC) Energy Jobs and Skills Forum.

This guide highlights how workers' current skills can match up with roles in offshore wind. At 70% - that’s a lot of exciting possibilities for the future.

The guide also includes information on entry-level career pathways for young people and those with limited experience looking to start a career in the industry.

We’re expecting to deliver up to 2,000 Victorian jobs over the project’s life, including 760 Gippsland jobs during construction and 200 long-term local jobs during operations.

Check out our website to download the guide and find out how you could become one of the skilled people we’ll need to get this project off the ground.

‘Making the move to offshore wind – a guide for workers’ was co-funded by the Victorian Government, through the Energy Innovation Fund, and Star of the South.

Minister Lily D'Ambrosio MP welcomed the release of the worker guide with Chief Development Officer Erin Coldham

Learning more about port facilities for offshore wind

Ports will play a vital role in Star of the South’s construction and long-term operations – this is where a lot of the action happens.

Our team recently visited the Port of Hastings where the Victorian Government’s announced Victorian Renewable Energy Terminal (VRET) would be located.

It was great to meet with the Port of Hastings team for a tour of the proposed VRET location and hear more about the next steps in the port development project.

Getting VRET up and running is an important step to growing a local offshore wind industry, alongside other port upgrade initiatives to support offshore wind projects.

Thanks again to the team driving the VRET forward for taking time out of your busy schedules – we look forward to following your progress!

We’ve gone viral!

This month we celebrated World Ocean Day by sharing some underwater footage collected during our marine surveys – showing the antics of the wonderful creatures under the sea.

Our video of a Maori octopus taking on a draughtboard shark went viral on Facebook – with more than 5 million views and over 16,000 likes!

In case you missed it, check it out below.

Would you like to learn more about offshore wind?

A great way to learn about the offshore wind and renewables industries is through the many conferences hosted across Australia and online.

We’re looking forward to being part of several conferences over the coming months - we’d love to see some familiar or new faces there.

We're also looking forward to the upcoming launch of Women of Offshore Wind on 25 July in Melbourne. This new network aims to promote equality while celebrating and supporting women in the offshore wind industry, its complementary technologies and underpinning supply chain.
