Victorian offshore wind auction to go live in August

This week the Victorian Government announced it will proceed with the nation’s first offshore wind auction in August this year.

This announcement emphasises the need to build new large-scale generation to boost reliability and reduce emissions.

With 90% of coal-fired capacity forecast to retire by 2035, offshore wind is critical to help keep the lights on and create jobs for these skilled workforces in regions like Gippsland.

Star of the South alone could deliver 10% of the emissions reduction needed to reach Australia’s 2035 climate target, while creating hundreds of regional jobs and injecting billions into the economy.

We're ready to get on with realising these benefits and harnessing the world-class Bass Strait winds. We'll continue to work with government, industry partners and communities as we prepare to participate in this auction.

Out and about

If you’re curious about offshore wind energy or want to learn more about projects proposed in your area, find Gippsland’s offshore wind developer stall at these events in February:

  • Lakes Entrance Foreshore Market - Sunday 1 February, 9 am - 3 pm, next to the rotunda on the foreshore

  • Longford Community Market – Sunday 8 February, 9 am – 2 pm, Longford Recreation Reserve

What’s next in the environmental approvals process

In December we submitted Star of the South’s environmental assessments to government. The next key steps are:

  1. Government reviews the documentation to ensure it meets their requirements.

  2. The assessment is released publicly and submissions invited - we'll be available to help you find information and answer questions.

  3. We'll consider all submissions and respond to matters raised.

  4. Government considers the documentation and submissions when making an assessment and/or approval decisions.
