Benefits

We’re excited about the potential for offshore wind in Australia and the many benefits Star of the South could bring to local Gippsland communities, Victoria and Australia for years to come.

Thousands of new jobs and investment

Star of the South would create the right jobs at the right time. Up to 2,000 direct jobs in Victoria over its lifetime, including 760 Gippsland jobs during construction and 200 ongoing local jobs once it’s up and running. The project would invest around $8.7 billion in Victoria over its lifetime, including an estimated $6.4 billion direct boost to Gippsland’s economy and wider economic benefits worth more than $10.4 billion for the state (Gross Valued Added).

A new industry for Gippsland and the Latrobe Valley

Jobs and training would be supported across a number of industries including construction, local manufacturing, supply and apprentices. We’re exploring how we can help reskill and invest in the local workforce to develop an offshore wind industry in Australia and Gippsland.

Energy when and where it’s needed most

Powering around 1.2 million homes and providing up to 20% of Victoria’s electricity needs. Offshore winds in Bass Strait are strongly linked to the days and seasons with the highest demand for electricity, confirmed by 30 years of scientific data from the Bureau of Meteorology.

Kickstarting Australia’s biggest clean energy hub

The project has the potential to contribute to a new clean energy hub in Gippsland, boosting domestic job and manufacturing capabilities and building exports from other technologies like hydrogen.
