We look local first

Offshore wind will create significant new supply opportunities for Australian industry.

We’re working with global and local suppliers now to identify opportunities, build partnerships, and ensure local businesses are ready before construction begins.

Our ‘Look Local First’ commitment prioritises Australian suppliers – starting with Gippsland, where our projects are located. One way we’re doing this now is by supporting local suppliers to participate in, grow with, and maximise opportunities created in the offshore wind industry.

Offshore wind is a long-term industry. Building local capability now means stronger regional economies for decades to come.

How offshore wind
is procured

Offshore wind projects typically award several major contracts which create many downstream opportunities across construction, logistics and services.

If our projects are approved and move forward to construction, we expect to award around 10 major Tier 1 contracts, including:

  • Turbines

  • Foundations

  • Cables

  • Grid connection

  • Transport and logistics

  • Balance of plant.

These contracts create strong downstream opportunities such as:

  • Marine and port services

  • Logistics and freight

  • Civil construction

  • Site and vessel services

  • Electrical and mechanical works.

Supply spotlight: Australian steel

There are exciting opportunities for Australian steel manufacturing in offshore wind.

We toured factories in the Latrobe Valley, Geelong, Bendigo, Melbourne, Illawarra, Hunter and Perth, to see local capabilities first-hand and map out what can be made in Australia.

Around 300 tonnes of steel items per turbine can be fabricated in Australia today – including the enormous platforms and walkways, ladders and handrails, tubes and structural components that are attached to turbine foundations.

The steel opportunity on Star of the South alone represents millions of dollars for Australian manufacturing and this opportunity will only grow with the offshore wind industry.

SUPPLY SPOTLIGHT: Showcasing local capability

Many local businesses already have the experience, skills and capability to supply the offshore wind industry.

We’ve showcased more than 450 Australian businesses that provide the goods and services our Tier 1 contractors will need to procure locally – with a strong focus on Gunaikurnai and Gippsland businesses.
